Action To Develop Comber Greenway Welcomed

East Belfast DUP MLA Robin Newton has welcomed the formation of a Comber Greenway Steering Group (CSGS) involving senior officers from Belfast City Council, Lisburn & Castlereagh City Council and Ards & North Down Council and the Department for Infrastructure. Robin Newton said,

“This very positive step was agreed at the March meeting of Belfast City Council. The creation of this high-level strategic group will consider future ownership and management and development options for the Comber Greenway’s use.

I am greatly encouraged by the setting up of this high-profile group. It’s the type of forward thinking I have been lobbying for over over the past 18 months.

The Comber Greenway has huge potential to add to the quality of life of local residents  wether they are walkers, dog walkers or cyclists. It will offer an recreation and education facility for children, when developed, and a number of features along the seven mile route can be restored to highlight the history of this former railway line. The Department for Infrastructure has invested £350,000 this year to widen the pathway and remove shrubbery and lighting is planned from Hollywood Arches to Dundonald next year.

The strategy group can add to this current work programme and to the development thinking for the longer-term. Upgrading this route to a similar standard as the Connswater Community Greenway would bring huge benefits to East Belfast residents and the residents of Dundonald and Comber. I expect the Comber Greenway Steering Group to produce a development plan combined with an investment plan on how the project will proceed. As the project develops I would urge community consultation. Seeking the views of residents and users will contribute greatly to the overall success of this exciting community project.”
