ROBIN Newton East Belfast DUP MLA, a member of the NI Policing Board, said that another small business on an East Belfast arterial route has been robbed is part of a increasing trend.

Robin Newton said,

“This latest robbery carried out in broad daylight on the Woodstock Road and using threats against the shop assistant is very worrying and must be condemned.

These types of opportunistic robberies are becoming all too common and can leave the threatened staff with longer term health problems.

Local shops operating on Belfast’s main routes are a service to the local people. Often their opening hours are way beyond those of city centre shops. These long hours make them vulnerable but they are also a great service to local people.

Operating a local business is difficult in today’s economic climate and being robbed of goods makes the survival of the business even more difficult.

The police need the support of local people to catch these violent thieves. I am appealing to anyone who has even the smallest piece of information to make use of the police 101 telephone number.”
