ROBIN Newton East Belfast DUP MLA has welcomed the announcement by Northern Ireland Water Service to refurbish the Sydenham Wastewater Pumping Station.

Robin Newton said,

“Given the history of flooding in the area of the Sydenham Pumping Station there is a need to ensure the standards of upgrading is of the highest possible quality.

It is soul destroying to meet with householders who have been flooded, many more than once, and to see the dreadful impact such tragedies have on homes and families.

The three phases of this project need to be brought forward with a degree of urgency. The overall objectives must be to significantly improve the waste handling capacity of the Station. It is essential to ensure the station is manned 24 hours each day; early warning and immediate preventative action is required in the event of an emergency.

Improving and increasing the overall capacity of the station during phase two is essential and the third phase which may require the replacement, a new build, of the station away from local houses needs full consultation with residents to provide some comfort about future emergencies.”
